Music Theory Lessons
Music Theory Lessons
Dr. Lai's Music Theory lessons are not a one-size-fits-all approach. They are tailor-made for each student, considering their unique musical backgrounds and levels.
Beginner Level:
Basic rudiments include proper music notation of notes, note values, rests, time signatures, ties and slurs, dynamics, tempo marks, articulations, general musical signs and musical expressions, and accidentals. Scales, key signatures, and intervals.
Intermediate Level:
Compound meter, chromatic scale, scale degree names, triads, dominant 7th chord, chord inversions, figured bass, harmonic function, basic chord progression, non-harmonic tones, simple melodic writing, simple harmonization of a melody, basic musical forms: motive and phrase, AB form, ABA Form, Rondo Form.
Advanced Level:
Four-part harmony, chromatic harmony, counterpoint, harmonic analysis, formal analysis, orchestration, simple music composition.
The lessons' exact contents and pace largely depend on students' levels. If the students find the materials too easy, we could speed up and move forward. If the students find the materials too challenging, we could slow down and ensure everyone understands and digests the materials before moving forward. Feedback from students is essential. We'll find the right pace of progress for everyone.
Our lessons are designed to create a supportive learning environment. Written exercises and aural training are included in every lesson to help students better understand the materials. Students are encouraged to ask questions and learn from each other, ensuring they feel comfortable and supported in their learning journey.
Furthermore, our classes are not just about theory. We encourage students to bring the music pieces they are currently playing to the theory class. This way, they can see the practical application of the theory in the music they are familiar with, making the classes both substantial and fun.

Performing musicians: Enhancement of musicianship, musical interpretation, and appreciation through a more profound understanding of musical structure and styles.
